He said: "I know nothing about the sugars that prevent water going from roots to shoots... so I'm going to have to research that. "Suberin and callose, substances which impede the flow of water from the roots to the trunk and canes, are deposited in the vascular tissues of the vines, at first slowing, but eventually ceasing the flow of water through the vine. Periderm forms, turning the canes form green to brown."
