TONG N°11-CHARDONNAY is out and can be ordered from today onwards. Chardonnay has always been under attack, especially in Europe, for reasons familiar to many wine lovers. But the traditional image no longer holds true. While white Burgundy faces an identity crisis, Australian Chardonnay is finding its way back on stage with lean, mineral Chablis-like wines from lesser-known cool climates like Orange and Tumbarumba. These wines are slowly earning a reputation in Europe, mainly due to the new worldwide preference for more refined and clear wine styles. Sauvignon Blanc and to a lesser extent Riesling have clearly paved the path for modern Chardonnay. Big New World producers like Yellow Tail have changed their packaging from white bottles and luscious golden labels to green bottles and plainer labels in which green predominates. It is no longer in Burgundy that the most interesting Chardonnays are produced these days. This issue focuses mainly on the modern restrained styles of the New World and Australia in particular and examines the causes of white Burgundy's current situation.

 The HOLIDAY Season is upon us.

From TODAY to New Year's Day, our lives will change. Holidays, Parties, Birthdays, Family Celebrations and Holiday Office Events will prevail.

It is Gift giving time. And Celebration time.

My yearly MANTRA has not changed--DRINK and GIVE a bottle of NICOLAS FEUILLATTE Champagne for the Holidays.

Years ago, when I had an idea for a CHAMPAGNE book. I went a little CRAZY and purchased every bottle of Champagne that I could afford, as research for the book. I wanted to set my palate in the right direction.

The journey began with 57 bottles of Champagne. My wife thought I was Crazy and thought I was wasting our hard earned money. It would have cost less to visit REIMS and the CHAMPAGNE area in person (I have never been) than to foolishly purchase Champagne.

It was an experiment.

What Champagne Company overall,for price and quality is the Best? I was after a line of Champagne from a vineyard, not just that One bottle that stood out, but the whole product line.
Hands down, the Winner, in my estimation was France's number one selling Champagne--NICOLAS FEUILLATTE. As we all know, even though it is debatable, the French have the Best Palate in the World (Sorry Italy). From cheese to foie gras to wine, the French
know what they are doing. And so does NICOLAS FEILLATTE.

Founded in 1972, with a 25 acre plot in Bouleuse, which was inherited, Nicolas Feuillatte began his 'BRILLIANT' journey in the Ardre Valley of Champagne.

In 1976 CHAMPAGNE NICOLAS FEUILLATTE was created. The company's history is new compared to his rivals, but the Quality and Finese of his products are unmatched.

Since 1976, JEAN-PIERRE VINCENT has been winemaker for Nicolas Feuillatte. Jean-Pierre talks about his winemaking, " DURING THE BLENDING, I AM LOOKING FOR PURE EXPRESSION OF THE HOUSE STYLE, WHICH I DEFINE AS THE 'Vineyard, Simplicity and Truth'.

To me, the Champagne from Nicolas Feuillatte is rich, full of freshness, lively and especially pure in expression.

Nicolas says, "Champagne is a modern wine with a touch of soul tied to it's history".

Critics say Nicolas Champagne is "WINE WITH BUBBLES".

CELEBRATE with QUINTA de SANTA EUFEMIA "PORT" for the HOLIDAYS! by Philip S. Kampe

Located on the left bank of the DOURO River,in-between Peso de Regua and Pinhao, are the vineyards of QUINTA de SANTA EUFEMIA.

Founded in 1894 by BERNARDO RODRIGUES de CARVALHO,the Family owned vineyard is located in the Heart of the oldest demarcated wine-producing region in the World, the DOURO.

Visiting the DOURO Valley is like stepping back in time. Few vineyard sites have electricity or running water. Grapes are hand-harvested due to the steep terraces and the remote locale of the vines.

Grapes are carried by basket to the press.

You get the picture--many vineyards have barely changed since the 14th century. The only thing that has changed are the EXPORT LAWS.

In this region, until 1986, it had been prohibitive for Small Port Houses to bottle their own wines.

IN 1986 EVERYTHING CHANGED.

The archaic EXPORT LAWS of the DOURO region were REVERSED and the families that have been working the land for GENERATIONS began to Export their wines.

QUINTA de SANTA EUFEMIA was finally able to share their wines with the world. The vines occupy 100 acres of steep vineyards grown among schist terraces. Farmed according to traditional (organic) methods, the varieties of grapes grown include:

Their releases include 10, 20, 30 and 40 year old Port wines and a 1973 WHITE PORT, which has become a Trademark of the vineyard across the globe.
