January 27 will be #PortDay

The Center for Wine Origins <http://www.wineorigins.com/>  is proud to announce that January 27 will be #PortDay. This inaugural social media event encourages the celebration of this truly unique wine that only comes from Portugal. What’s more, it is all made possible by YOU!

How can you participate? You and your readers can join #PortDay online by blogging, tweeting, posting and sharing your thoughts about this exceptional wine by using the #PortDay hashtag. Or, you can host or join an online or offline tasting event at one of the numerous retail and restaurant tastings that are being planned in locations across the United States. As part of this celebration, the Center is hosting a contest to encourage U.S. consumers to photograph their favorite authentic Port wines. To enter the contest to win an iPad 2, contest entrants should send a picture of an authentic Port label to wineorigins@clsdc.com with the subject line as “Port Day 2012 Photo Contest Entry” or post the picture to your Facebook profile and tag yourself and the Center for Wine Origins <https://www.facebook.com/pages/Center-for-Wine-Origins/25795351212>  in the picture. There are many quality fortified and dessert wines, but true Port only comes from the Port appellation in Portugal, one of the world’s oldest regulated and demarcated wine regions. Unfortunately, today the Port name is misused on wine bottles across the world and particularly in the United States. Wines produced not from the grapes grown in the Douro Valley are misleading consumers to believe it is Port by improperly putting the name on its label. When shopping for Port and entering the contest, make sure to look for the seal of the approval <http://www.wineorigins.com/?page_id=48>  and confirm that the wine comes from Portugal.

CELEBRATE with QUINTA de SANTA EUFEMIA "PORT" for the HOLIDAYS! by Philip S. Kampe

Located on the left bank of the DOURO River,in-between Peso de Regua and Pinhao, are the vineyards of QUINTA de SANTA EUFEMIA.

Founded in 1894 by BERNARDO RODRIGUES de CARVALHO,the Family owned vineyard is located in the Heart of the oldest demarcated wine-producing region in the World, the DOURO.

Visiting the DOURO Valley is like stepping back in time. Few vineyard sites have electricity or running water. Grapes are hand-harvested due to the steep terraces and the remote locale of the vines.

Grapes are carried by basket to the press.

You get the picture--many vineyards have barely changed since the 14th century. The only thing that has changed are the EXPORT LAWS.

In this region, until 1986, it had been prohibitive for Small Port Houses to bottle their own wines.

IN 1986 EVERYTHING CHANGED.

The archaic EXPORT LAWS of the DOURO region were REVERSED and the families that have been working the land for GENERATIONS began to Export their wines.

QUINTA de SANTA EUFEMIA was finally able to share their wines with the world. The vines occupy 100 acres of steep vineyards grown among schist terraces. Farmed according to traditional (organic) methods, the varieties of grapes grown include:

MALVAZIA FINA
MALVAZIA REI

Today, the vineyard is run by JOSE VISEU de CARVALHO and his adult children, PEDRO and LUCIA CALVALHO.

Generations of the family run-business with a strict doctrine of farming and vinification have brought QUINTA de SANTA EUFEMIA to the forefront of PORT Production.

Their releases include 10, 20, 30 and 40 year old Port wines and a 1973 WHITE PORT, which has become a Trademark of the vineyard across the globe.
