St. Bartholomew and ... Klopotec? A Croatian Wine Story

It is not known when Saint Bartholomew was born or when he died, so in Western Christianity he is celebrated on August 24. In addition to religious observations, this red martyr became known in folk customs as a protector of many trades, including the winegrowers.

While in some cultures the feast St. Bartholomew in August has been marked for centuries with various fairs, in Croatia, specifically in the Croatian uplands, St. Bartholomew or Sveti Bartol, is celebrated traditionally as a day when winemakers check the ripeness of grapes.

Just today, Tatjana Hažić, the winemaker and producer at Vinska Kuca Hažić, checked the grapes and is optimistic about this year: “Looking good!,” she says, “healthy grapes and leaves on this Traminac!”

In fact, there is a saying in Međimurje:

“Ako Bartol zrelo grožđe kuša, dobra je za muža.”

(If Bartol tastes ripe grapes, it is a good year for the husband.)

This clearly is an old saying - the assumption is that the winemaker is a man. Well, if one fast forwards to 21st century, Croatia has many women winemakers (which is an entirely different story).

In this story, the two women that play a big role are sisters Tatjana and Valentina Hažić, who are not only winemakers and producers of natural juices in this family estate, but are also organizing many events gathering people from afar to celebrate Međimurje traditions. Enter raising of Klopotec on St. Bartholomew’s celebration.

What is “Klopotec”?

The literal translation is rattle, but this is a rather big one. Klopotec consists of a large pole with sort of a mill on top, that has been built from various types of wood to create the most possible noise. The oak branches are also added for easier flow, as their leaves don’t fall after they dry. Why is the noise needed? Well, if the grapes are ripe, the birds will come for a feast and the winemakers will have none of that.

So, on St. Bartholomew, it is a tradition to gather everyone to check the grapes, raise klopotec and wish for the best possible weather for the last few weeks for the grapes. This year, there was no wind so Dean Radanović, cyclist from Zagreb, climbed up to start the rattling.

Then, of course, everyone starts to drink wine.

Where to Get Wines from Međimurje

With these kinds of stories of people, traditions and the attention given to the grapes, the wines of course taste great. #GoGoldenBordeaux Virtual Tasting for #winelover-s

On November 7th, as I was traveling in Europe, I missed the opportunity to join another very entertaining and educative virtual tasting by Snooth. The #GoGoldenBordeaux tasting.

But what does it mean? #GoGoldenBordeaux means the changing tide for the sweet wines from Bordeaux. The wines are not just golden in color, but they are golden in flavor! And this was a golden opportunity to experience the wines in a different light. The light of pairing them with salty and spicy foods!

Crazy huh?! I know... But it works!

Please don't have to take my word for it. Here's what some #winelover-s had to say on twitter during the tasting about this golden idea! [pun intended]

They tasted the following wines:

My dear #winelover-s and #LifeLover-s of the world, we have a great cause to help: Dan Hegyi.

Help For Dan

For: Dan Hegyi
Timișoara, TM, Romania
Organizer: Asociatia Ceva De Spus

The Story

Inside Dan’s head things happen a bit differently sometimes.

Normally, any thought, any action is controlled by neurons. Neurons send out electrical signals from one to another, forming a communication chain. One neuron receives the information and it passes it on.

Inside Dan’s head, sometimes all of the neurons send out signals, but none of them receives them.

That is how an epilepsy seizure occurs. Dan suffers from this condition since he was 3 months old, and it affects his short term memory, attention span, problem solving and anticipation skills.

Although Dan’s IQ is high, his condition affects his ability to work.

Seizures are hard to anticipate. They begin with stomach aches, nausea, followed by a loss of consciousness, which leads to him falling down and injuring himself, wherever he may be at that time. During the seizure, his muscles spasm painfully and his whole body shakes.

Once the seizure has passed, Dan has difficulties speaking, he is dizzy and his vision is blurry.

The frequency of the seizures can be fairly high, up to three per day.

In 2012, during a seizure which occurred in the staircase of the building where he lives, Dan fell, hit his head and ended up in a coma at the hospital. A brain surgery saved his life at that moment, but Dan lost a portion of his brainpan and epilepsy continues to endanger his life.

Very recently, Dan found out that all these problems could be solved by a surgery performed at a hospital in Budapest. All he needs is money and courage.

A successful surgery would give back to Dan his health, dignity, safety and capacity to work.

Things would begin to happen as they should, inside Dan’s head.

...and then a new foundation was born: #winelover FOR life.

...and then a new foundation was born:
#winelover FOR life.

Why?

Elisabetta Tosi's tweet explains it all!

Fight against something and we focus on the thing we hate. Fight for something and we focus on the thing we love.
Simon Sinek -> Follow him on Twitter!

Many of you already know that the #winelover community has a foundation - #winelover against cancer (you can learn more about it here: http://www.winelover.co/chapter-1) - and that we have been raising awareness against cancer (especially against breast cancer, as you can see in the picture above - our very first campaign in Sicily) for almost two years now.

Well, after seeing Elisabetta's tweet, I spoke with my Brothers-In-Wine, Magnus Reuterdahl and Ted Lelekas, to explain why it would be important to broaden the scope of our foundation (instead of being "only" against cancer, we would be FOR many things that would make the lives of #winelover-s better, such as helping people with disabilities, or donating to causes like the fires in Portugal for example, but also why it's important to focus on the positive side of things (again, Elisabetta's tweet says it all.)
They loved the idea! 😃🍷👍❤️
So, I moved to the next step...

I talked to another Brother-In-Wine of mine:
Szövérdfi-Szép Zoltán and explained to him that I wnated to do the official launching of "#winelover FOR life" during his amazing event - "ROVINHUD Salon" http://www.salonul.net/en/despre.html to be held in November this year in Timisoara, Romania. He said that he loves me... and I said "I love you too!"  So this is it... If you are a #winelover, you have to join us in Romania. Rovinhud in itself was already a must (you can see my article about the event last year here: http://thewinehub.blogspot.com/2016/11/the-rovinhud-salon-should-be-named-one.html)
and now with this very special addition?

You must be there...

#SeeYouInRomania!!!
