A SELECTION OF VALUE RED WINES FOR THE FALL AND WINTER by Philip S. Kampe

Obviously the wines of summer, mostly white and rose, can be drunk year round, but, as the season changes, often wine consumption, category wise changes.

It is November and 26 degrees in the Berkshires of Massachusetts today and not a day that calls for a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. Yes, it's true, I can drink that crisp, grapefruit-melon wine all year round, but, today, after raking the leaves, I desire a wine that is more rugged-namely a red.

I checked my wine cellar to see what bargain wine would be the wine of the day, for me, and came up with many choices that I had stockpiled during the summer months. Normally, I buy a bottle of wine, test it and return for more of the same if I enjoy what I am drinking, both quality wise and value wise,

Of course that is not true for special occasions, where the event and cost factor for the wine or champagne are on a different scale.

RED WINE SUGGESTIONS FOR THE FALL and WINTER MONTHS

Wines from CHILE have been on everyone's radar for several years, now. I have to admit to buying the whites, as bargain wines for the summer. Their price and crispness met my standards. I thought it was time to try some reds from Chile. This is what I discovered.

VINA LOS VASCOS Vineyard was acquired by LES DOMAINES BARONS de ROTHCHILD in 1988.

The property met the ROTHCHILD criteria and was completely renovated, both in viticulture and in viniculture.

VINA LOS VASCOS is the largest property in the CANETEN Valley of COLCHAQUA, with over 4,500 acres. The complete estate is of a small enough size that all of the grapes are "Hand Picked, Hand Sorted, Estate Grown and Estate Bottled''.

The history of the estate goes back to the mid-nineteenth century, when two of the leading Chilean wine producers brought vines from BORDEAUX to improve the quality of the original vineyards of VINA LOS VASCOS.

CHILE'S natural geographic frontier protected it from the PHYLOXERA epidemic of the late nineteenth century and resulted in an unbroken wine stock that produces some of the finest wines in all of Chile.

The wine is a classic and made VINA LOS VASCOS famous for it's Cabernet Sauvignon.
The wine has good fruit quality, fresh aromas and is supple and fleshy. Sweet tannins prevail with the flavor of pepper, blackberries and dark cherries.
A true bargain!!

BODEGAS CATENA was born out of an alliance of two cultures, France and Argentina, and two noble grapes, the CABERNET SAUVIGNON and MALBEC and two renowned wine families, DOMAINE BARON de ROTHCHILD (Lafite) and NICOLAS CATENA.

Their catch line for their wines is: " Two Cultures, Two Families, Two Varietals, ONE WINE"
